Kate: Jax, it’s me.

Jax: Oh, Kate. This is unexpected.

Kate: Oh. I’m sorry. Did I wake you?

Jax: No, no. I’ve been up for a while.

Kate: Oh, that’s good, because we have some important business we need to discuss.

Carly: By all means, discuss away.

Carly: Don’t worry about me. I wouldn’t dream of interfering.

Kate: Why don’t you stop by the office when you’re free?

Jax: Well, actually, have a seat. I’m glad you stopped by.

Kate: All right. Well, first off, you’ll be pleased to know that “Crimson’s” initial sales are way ahead of projection.

Carly: Would you like some coffee?

Kate: No, thank you, Carly.

Carly: There you go.

Jax: Thank you very much.

Kate: So I want to keep up the momentum, Jax, by having some eye-popping covers for the holidays. I’m in discussions with Gwyneth and Natalie’s people for December and January.

Jax: Sounds great.

Kate: Yes. But it will put us a little over budget.

Jax: How much over budget?

Kate: Actually, I have some figures here for you. There you go.

Jax: Here we go.

Kate: Could you possibly do that somewhere else, like, say, the bathroom?

Carly: Oh, I’m sorry. Am I distracting you?

Kate: Not me.

Jax: No, you’re not disturbing us. These numbers are a little high.

Kate: Yes, but I think they’re worth it, Jax.

Jax: When do we have to let them know?

Kate: Giselle is chomping at the bit to get Natalie for December, but the agent has given me until noon today.

Jax: Okay. Well, I — I trust your — your instincts, so go ahead.

Kate: Great. Thank you, Jax. So, on that note, I’m going to go to the office and I’m going to make some calls.

Jax: Well, actually, there is one more thing that I want to discuss. How you lied to me to make Carly look bad.

Jax: I have the phone records from the “Crimson” office for the day in question. No calls were made to our home. Once I had confirmation of this disturbing discrepancy, I called Roger Canfield personally. He told me that the meeting was set up at the last minute.

Kate: I don’t know what you want me to say.

Jax: You deliberately set Carly up to undermine my marriage.

Kate: As you recall, Carly tried to get Claudia Zacchara to buy out your portion –

Jax: You can skip the justifications, Kate. It’s a waste of time, really.

Kate: I made a choice to neutralize Carly. It was wrong. I regret it.

Jax: I expect my business partners and employees to conduct business with ethics and integrity. Right now, you don’t meet those standards.

Kate: I have never been accused of unethical behavior, Jax.

Jax: Well, “Crimson’s” just launched. We both intend to see it succeed, at which point I may or may not sell. In the meantime, I suggest you back up all your meetings with paperwork.

Kate: I can assure you, nothing of this nature will ever happen again.

Jax: If you lie to me again, I will replace you with someone more trustworthy to run “Crimson.” Do I make myself clear?

Kate: Yeah, you make yourself clear, Jax. Why don’t we put this unfortunate incident behind us and for the good of the magazine, keep this disagreement private?

Jax: Yes. I think that would be best.

[Door closes]

Carly: Do you know how much I love you?

Jax: Mm-hmm. Really?

Kate: Sonny?

Sonny: Yeah?

Kate: We need to talk — about Carly.

Sonny: What did she do now?

Kate: Well, in point of fact, it’s something that I did. Carly tried to get Claudia Zacchara to buy out Jax’s portion of “Crimson,” and I retaliated by making it look as if she had lied to Jax.

Sonny: You framed Carly?

Kate: Yeah.

Sonny: That’s not right. You shouldn’t have done that.

Kate: It’s the least of what she deserves.

Sonny: Carly is like a bull in front of a red flag. You know that. Why do what she does and cross her? She’s gong to want payback for the rest of our lives. Do you want that?

Kate: No — well, she got her payback. She got it in spades. Jax uncovered the truth; he gave me a dressing down in front of Carly. He threatened to have me fired from “Crimson” if I ever lied to him again. And Carly was loving every minute of it.

Sonny: Carly was right there the whole time? Okay, well, it’s over.

Kate: It’s over?

Sonny: Yeah.

Kate: Are you kidding me? She’s going to look for the next opportunity to set me up.

Sonny: I don’t think she’s going to do — just — you’ve got to let that go.

Kate: Sonny, she is a vindictive child. She will not rest until I’m fired from “Crimson.”

Sonny: So — but right now she thinks she’s got the advantage, right? Why manipulate Jax so she can sit back and wait for you to make another mistake?

Kate: I really, really loathe how well you understand her.

Sonny: I’m just making an observation. The best thing for you to do right now is you let it go.

Kate: I disagree. I think I need to do damage control with Jax. And I think our wedding is the perfect opportunity.

Sonny: What does our wedding have to do with framing Carly?

Kate: Well, Jax and I agreed to put on a good face for the magazine, which means Jax and Carly will be invited to the wedding.

Sonny: That’s a bad idea.

Kate: Oh, no, I think it’s a great idea. Carly is insanely possessive of you. She won’t be able to stop herself from acting out and Jax will finally see the truth about her.

Sonny: Our wedding is not supposed to be about manipulation and games. It’s supposed to be about us.

Kate: And it will be about us.

Sonny: It will be, right.

Kate: It will. I will be a lot happier knowing that my career has no threat, and the truth is, I would like to see Carly’s face when we say our vows.

Sonny: It doesn’t work for me. I don’t want Carly anywhere near the wedding.

Kate: Oh, Sonny.

Sonny: Because it’s just going to build — she’ll find a way to blow everything apart.

Kate: How could she possibly blow everything apart? What could she possibly do?
